What Not To Plant Together

As a gardener you do everything to keep your plants happy, but sometimes, no matter what few things don’t work together. Sometimes, it’s a matter of height or it could be matter of moisture, diseases, pests etc. 

Most of the gardeners fill their space with one or the other plant to have good harvest. Well, every time you don’t get the expected results every time, you should know what to plant and what not to when you’re planning to have a beautiful garden.

What Not To Plant Together:

Beans And Peas:

Beans and peas don’t go along with few vegetables including all kinds of peppers, sweet and hot. They are not fans of bulb type vegetables, so do avoid planting them with chives, garlic, leeks and onions. 

Broccoli And Cauliflower:

Neither cauliflower nor broccoli works great along with peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, and squash of all types including zucchini, winter squash and yellow squash.

Carrots:

Carrots cannot grow well when planted near dill plant. The dill has very noticeable effect on the crop and don’t plant carrots along with parsnips too.

Cucumbers:

Generally, cucumbers are first vegetable that many new gardeners which usually give good results. However, you should not plant them near potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower or any other strong aromatic herbs like cilantro, basil, rosemary, thyme and lavender.

Corn:

Corn and tomatoes, both the plants are easily susceptible to cotton bollworm and tomato fruit warm, so keep them apart.

Brussels sprouts:

Brussels sprouts don’t grow well when planted next to tomato and strawberry plants.

Asparagus:

Asparagus doesn’t grow well when planted near to other plants. So, give them enough space and don’t plant them next to onions, garlic and potatoes.

Kohlrabi:

Avoid growing kohlrabi with near pole beans, tomatoes or strawberries.

Beets:

Beets should be avoided growing near mustard plants or any member of bean or peas family.

Lettuce:

Lettuce grows well when planted away from beans and beets and also parsley.

Celery:

Celery should be avoided planting near potatoes or parsnips for better results.

Melons:

Melons easily caught funguses when planted near squashes, potatoes or cucumbers.

Tomatoes:

Even though cucumbers, cilantro and tomatoes are delicious together, don’t grow them too close.

Marigold:

Marigolds are one of the best plants in any vegetable garden to keep pests away. However, they are detrimental effect on beans and peas. Pole beans, bush beans, peas should be planted away from marigold plants.

Sunflowers:

Often, sunflowers emit a chemical from their roots that results in preventing growth of nearby plants. Even the seed shells contain toxic chemicals that will kill grass and other plants, so it’s better to harvest seeds before the seeds begin to drop. So, never plant other plants within 12 inches of sunflower plants.
