What Is Epsom Salt? How To Use Epsom Salt For Tastier Tomatoes

You might have heard about incredible uses of Epsom salt in your home, but you can also use it in your garden too. Using Epsom salt for your tomato plants will help you to have sweeter, tastier and better harvest. Check out how to use Epsom salt to harvest tastier tomatoes from your garden.

What Is Epsom Salt?

Epsom salt is actually a compound called magnesium sulphate that occurs naturally. It is known for providing wonderful benefits when growing tomatoes, and works as a plant fertilizer and help with magnesium deficiency. 

How To Use Epsom Salt For Tastier Tomatoes?

Incorporate using Epsom salt to tomato plants from the start for healthier harvest at the end.

  • For Potted Tomatoes:

Dissolve 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt in one gallon of water and use this solution to water your plants. Water them once in a month with Epsom salt solution and switch to regular watering for the rest of the days.

  • When Planting Tomato Seedlings:

When you’ve decided to grow tomato plants in your garden, take one cup of Epsom salt and sprinkle it over the plot of seedlings. Ideally, 1 cup of Epsom salt covers 100square foot and make sure you spread it evenly. 

When you’re done, work the Epsom salt in soil which makes it easier for your tomatoes for obtaining nutrients from the soil. It also helps to build stronger roots, strengthening cell walls and burst in to healthier blooms.

  • For Maintaining Tomato Plants:

Once your tomatoes mature, start using Epsom salt to the soil to avoid condition called magnesium deficiency. Spread 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per foot of plant height. If your plant is two feet height, then use 2 table spoons of Epsom salt.

Use it for every 15 days and for other plants, general rule is once in every six weeks. 

  • Using Epsom Salt AS Foliar Spray Or Soil Drench:

 Drenching with Epsom salt increases overall health of tomato plant by boosting magnesium dose of the plant. So, if your tomatoes need a boost mix one or two table spoons of Epsom salt in one gallon of lukewarm water. Drench them at the base of tomato plant and allow the water to soak in the ground. Repeat it throughout the season as necessary. 

Additional Benefits Of Using Epsom Salt:

Using Epsom salt with proper precaution, below are some things to expect:

  • Harvest larger tomato fruits
  • Tomatoes are less prone to problems
  • Ripening color is brighter than the usual color of tomatoes
  • Tomatoes taste sweet and incredibly juicy
  • Better seed germination and plant growth
  • Improve chlorophyll production

You can also use Epsom salt to other vegetables in your garden like cucumbers, peppers, etc. to have a better harvest.
