To achieve a perfect ripened tomato, you need to emphasize staking tomatoes in a good way. Sometimes plants get enormous and get weighed down by an abundance of fruit. It is very necessary to stake your tomato plants because there are chances that the branches will break due to overweight. In some cases, the entire plant tip-over or in other cases the stem even snaps off. Tomatoes may even rot if they lay unsupported on the ground. To achieve a perfect tomato growth it is very necessary to stake tomatoes.

Staking in pots

One mistake that people often do is that they don’t stake their tomatoes if they are planted in pots or containers. Even the small varieties of tomatoes need to be staked properly. If you have a shallow container, then using 2 to 3 stakes will help to share the load of the tomatoes equally. If you have a deep pot then one stake will work well.

Tomato cages

It is advised to cage tomatoes especially if those are cherry tomatoes. It is a quick and easy method that works wonder for container or pot planted tomatoes. It can be expensive if you are planning to stake tomatoes in an open field or ground.

There are wire cages available in home improvement stores. The cages may be cone or round-shaped and open from the top. One thing to keep in mind is that some cages are very flimsy. The sturdier the tomato cage the better it is.

These tomato cages can also be used year after year.

Single stake method

This method can be used for all kinds of tomatoes. This method requires one stake for each plant. The bigger the plant the strong at stake it needs. 

You need to dig a strong stake in the soil of your young tomato plant. Experts suggest that you should burry one third the length of the whole soil depth.

After sinking the stake, tie the plant’s stem to the stake using nylon or a cotton cloth.

You can also use a bamboo stake for small tomatoes and cherry tomatoes.

Trellis method

Trellis method is useful if you want to grow your tomato plants into bushy shapes. Trellis method can be achieved by attaching a string to the plant.

You can make your own trellis or buy it from the market. Make sure that that it is deep and 3 to 5 inches away from your tomato plant. Tie the sturdy branches of the tomato plants to the trellis.

For extra support, you may also tie trellis to a strong poll.

Vertical string method

It is one of the best methods if you have a limited space to grow tomatoes.

You can buy a frame or even a simple bamboo, can be attached as a stake to provide support to the plants. In this method, a cotton string or a nylon cord is tied at the top of the frame which holds the tomato from to the ground. A tomato plant can be tied according to the string as it grows just like a stake.
