How to Care for a Jade Plant

Jade plant is often called as friend ship plant or lucky plant and even money plant, is notoriously low maintenance and difficult to kill. This plant has long been thought to bring good fortune to their owners and that’s the reason many people present this plant as housewarming gifts to their dear ones.

Jade plant produce fresh oval shaped green leaves on thick stalks and easily grow in to a shrub like plant that reaches up to 5 feet when grown indoors. If you’re a houseplant expert they are attractive enough to capture your attention every time. However, this plant require special attention and care to avoid becoming top heavy or tipping the plants pot over.

Here are some tips you should know about caring your jade plant in order to help it thrive for longer periods.

How To Care For Jade Plant:

Jade plant care includes some important factors like sunlight, water, soil, fertilizer and propagation.

Soil Requirement For Jade Plant:

Jade plant need cactus soil with some added organic matter or mix your own with 1 part soil, 1 part of peat moss and 3 parts coarse builders sand. 

Water Requirements For Jade Plant:

This is one of the most important things to consider when it comes to jade plant care. Water them properly in adequate amount and never let it dry out completely. And also, do not water a jade plant too often which leads to cause of root rot. Just water it when the top of soil is dry to the touch.

Sunlight Requirement For Jade Plant:

Sunlight is another aspect to consider when it comes care for jade plant. This plant needs full sun in order to grow properly and if they do not have full sun they become stunted and leggy.

Temperature Requirement For Jade Plant:

Jade plant prefers average summer temperature of 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. In winter it prefers 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If they get lots of sunlight, they do great in temperatures that are higher than this.

Fertilizer Requirement For Jade Plant:

Fertilize your jade plant once in every 6 months. Use a balanced water soluble fertilizer and make sure not to apply fertilizer when the soil is dry as this will damage its roots.

Caring Jade Plant:

To remove dusts on jade plant wipe down the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth. Make sure to pinch out new growth with your thumb and finger to encourage that plant to fill out and develop dense foliage. 

Propagating Jade Plant:

Jade plant is known for its ease propagation, they can be easily propagated from single leaf. Sprout its leaves by placing them in to a succulent and then cover the dish until they sprout.

Repotting Jade Plant:

  • Jade plant need to be repotted when it’s required and make sure the soil is dry before repotting.
  • Knock away the old soil from the roots and remove any rotted or dead roots in the process. 
  • Place this plant in new pot and backfill with potting soil by spreading the roots out as you repot.
  • Leave the pot dry for few days then begin to water lightly to reduce the cause of root rot.
